Common Back and Spine Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms of spine, neck, or back pain, it is important to seek care before the injury worsens.

Lower Back Pain

Low back pain is a common and often painful condition that affects the lower portion of the spine or back. While it can be caused by an injury, chronic low back pain may indicate something more than just muscle strain.

Hip Pain

Pain from the back and spine also can be felt around the buttocks and hip and can signify sciatica or a pinched nerve. This can affect one side of the body and can cause pain in the back of the right or left hip.

Weakness in Knee or Leg

Weakness can occur with extended activities such as rigorous exercise. However, weakness in the leg or knee for extended periods can signify a Herniated disc or Lumbar degenerative disc disease.

Muscle Ache

Muscle ache is a common back pain issue. However, if the issue does not resolve over time, you may have an underlying spine and back issue that will need attention in order to prevent future pain.

Shooting & Stabbing Pain

Shooting and stabbing pain can be a common symptom of neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain is often described as a shooting or burning pain that is unrelenting and severe at times.

Pain Radiating Down Leg

A shooting pain that begins in the lower back radiates into the buttock and down the back of one leg is a common symptom of sciatica. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body.

Pain Worsens with Activity

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor. If you are experiencing pain that worsens with bending, lifting, or walking then there may be an underlying issue.

Pain That Improves with Reclining

Lower back pain will affect most people at some point in their life. If you experience back pain that can only be relieved with a recliner, you may have a strained muscle in your back.

Back Spasms

A back spasm is the involuntary contraction or tensing of the muscles in the lower back. The pain ranges from mild discomfort to chronic spasms with severe pain that makes moving difficult.

Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common symptom that can arise from various causes, including cervical degenerative disc disease.
